How Tanzanian phone shops can sell simu kwa mkopo: TZS schedules, matching M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas and Airtel Money payments, and responsible EMI locking.
In Kariakoo, phone shops sit side by side and customers compare prices in seconds. Offering simu kwa mkopo, a phone on installments, lets a shop win customers who cannot pay the full price today. It works only if every small payment is recorded against the right customer.
Accepting more than one network
Customers pay through Vodacom M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money or HaloPesa. Keep one installment record per customer in RecTym and record each confirmed transaction ID, whichever network it came from.
- check_circleGive each customer an account number to quote when paying.
- check_circleUse a Lipa Namba or business number, not a personal line.
- check_circleReconcile every network statement at the end of the day.
- check_circlePut payments without a reference on an exceptions list.
Example figures
A TZS 450,000 phone with a TZS 100,000 deposit leaves TZS 350,000, paid as TZS 35,000 a week for ten weeks. This is an illustration, not RecTym pricing or financing terms.
Kiswahili first
Explain the installment terms and device management in Kiswahili before the customer signs, and send reminders in Kiswahili. Train staff so they can explain what happens if a payment is late and how the phone is released after the final payment.
Fair use of the EMI lock
- check_circleRemind the customer before the due date.
- check_circleCheck every network statement before any restriction.
- check_circleUse only the authorized process the customer agreed to.
- check_circleRelease the phone the same day the final payment is confirmed.
Data protection
Tanzania’s Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 applies to NIDA details and phone numbers you collect. Keep the signed agreement and take legal advice on your financing model. RecTym is software; it does not lend money.
