A practical routine for Ghanaian phone shops: record GHS installments, match MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money payments, and use an EMI lock fairly.
For many phone shops in Accra’s Circle, in Kumasi’s Adum or in Takoradi, mobile money is the till. Customers who buy a smartphone in parts pay their weekly installment by MoMo, often from a relative’s number and sometimes late at night. That is convenient for the customer and confusing for the shop.
Here is a simple routine for keeping installment records accurate, so an EMI lock app like RecTym is only ever used on accounts that are truly overdue.
Why mobile money needs a daily routine
- check_circleA payment can come from a number that is not on the customer’s file.
- check_circleThe reference may be empty, or say “phone” instead of an account number.
- check_circleOne customer may pay GHS 40 by MTN MoMo and GHS 60 by Telecel Cash in the same week.
- check_circlePayments sent after closing time appear on tomorrow’s statement.
A five-step reconciliation routine
- check_circleGive each customer an account number at the counter and write it on their receipt.
- check_circleAsk them to use it as the MoMo reference every time they pay.
- check_circleEach evening, download the wallet statements and match every payment to an account in RecTym.
- check_circlePut unmatched payments on an exceptions list for one named staff member.
- check_circleOnly review overdue accounts after the exceptions list is cleared.
Example figures
A GHS 2,400 phone with a GHS 600 deposit leaves GHS 1,800, paid as GHS 150 a week for twelve weeks. This is an illustration, not RecTym pricing or financing terms.
Talk to customers in their language
Many customers are more comfortable in Twi, Ga, Ewe or Dagbani than in English. Explain the installment terms and the device-management feature in the language the customer understands before they sign. Clear communication prevents disputes later.
Consent and data protection
Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) applies to the names, Ghana Card details and phone numbers you collect. Keep the signed agreement with each account, and take legal advice on your financing model. RecTym is software; it does not lend money.
